Injected 1+ ion beam as a diagnostics tool of charge breeder ECR ion source plasmas

International audience; Charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (CB-ECRIS) are used as 1+  →n+  charge multiplication devices of post-accelerated radioactive ion beams. The charge breeding process involves thermalization of the injected 1+  ions with the plasma ions in ion–ion collisions, subsequent ionization by electron impact and extraction of the n+  ions. Charge breeding experiments of 85Rb and 133Cs ion beams with the 14.5 GHz PHOENIX CB-ECRIS operating with oxygen gas demonstrate the plasma diagnostics capabilities of the 1+  injection method. The components of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) generated from the gas-phase ozonolysis of two C(10)H(16)-terpenes (alpha-pinene; sabinene) and a cyclic C(6)H(10) alkene (cyclohexene) were characterized by the use of a Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization source operated in the negative ion mode. Abstract. The detection of primary biological material in submicron aerosol by means of thermal desorption/electron impact ionization aerosol mass spectrometry was investigated. Mass spectra of amino acids, carbohydrates, small peptides, and proteins, all of which are key building blocks of biological particles, were recorded in laboratory experiments. Several characteristic marker fragments were identified. The intensity of the marker signals relative to the total organic mass spectrum allows for an estimation of the content of primary biological material in ambient organic aerosol. Studies in organic mass spectrometry.VIII. The electron impact mass spectra of 2,4-substituted-3-diazo-5-phenylpyrroles

The electron impact mass spectra (75 eV) of the β-diazopyrroles always show the molecular ions and undergo as the main fragmentation process the elimination of nitrogen followed by ring opening reactions leading to benzonitrile either as neutral or charged species. The peaks at 26 amu below the molecular ions, which are a general feature of these spectra, are due to the presence of the corresponding pyrroles which are formed by reductive reactions during the vaporization process of the samples.

Internal ion impact ionization for Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance

A general scheme for ionization and fragmentation of ions in Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICRMS) is introduced. The technique is based upon excitation of high-frequency (i.e. lowmass) primary ions (e.g. N, Al+, H2O+·) which may be generated by standard ionization methods (e.g. electron ionization or laser desorption) inside the trap. Generation of the primary ions is followed by excitation of their cyclotron motion to high translational energy to serve as projectile ions. Abstract The long-lived radio isotope 237 Np is generated within the nuclear fuel cycle and represents a major hazard in the final disposal of nuclear waste. Related geochemical research requires sensitive methods for the detection of ultratrace amounts of neptunium in environmental samples. Resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) has proven to be one of the most sensitive methods for the detection of plutonium. Determination of the first ionization potential of einsteinium by resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS)

Abstract The first ionization potential of einsteinium (IP Es ) was determined by resonance ionization mass spectroscopy (RIMS) using samples with ≤10 12 atoms of 254 Es ( T 1/2 =276 days). This method is based on the measurement of photoionization thresholds as a function of applied electric field strength, followed by extrapolation to zero field strength to yield IP Es . An atomic beam of Es was created by heating a filament on which einsteinium was electrodeposited from an aqueous solution onto a tantalum backing and covered with titanium metal.
